This series makes direct reference to architectural detail. The introduction of decorative elements was initially an extension of formal questions, heightening the tension between surface and layered depth. This research was extended in the “Italian Works”, completed in Italy in late 1990, drawing upon numerous details within the rich built environments experienced during the residency. The planar division of the earlier structures were replaced by a series of overlapping illusionistic layers.
