After returning from Italy in 1990 Zika focused upon the broader issues of visual artifice and questions of superficiality in the application of decoration. Initially he developed the “Italian Works” into large-scale multi level constructions, but quickly became particularly concerned with the audacious use of decoration employed within the theatrical and a-tectonic Baroque style. A short research trip in 1992 to specifically study Franconian and Andalucian Baroque gave impetus to this series of works.
