Paul ZIka completed an Associateship Diploma and a Fellowship Diploma at RMIT between 1968-71, majoring in Painting with a minor in Printmaking. In the later years of those courses the paintings produced were shaped geometric canvases, reductive in nature and often using sets of complimentary colours. Although two dimensional in format, the combination of shape and colour suggested ambiguous three-dimensional form. Screenprints were made directly in tandem with the paintings, often in advance to test designs and configurations. During 1972-3 while completing a Teacher Training program and commencing teaching, Zika concentrated on a suite of 12 large format Screenprints which comprised his first solo exhibition at Chapman Powell Street Gallery, South Yarra in 1973.
